Dr Thomas Renwick


Dr. Thomas Renwick arrived in Nelson in October 1842 as Surgeon of the ship 'Thomas Harrison'. He adopted his nephew (also Thomas Renwick) who inherited Dumgree at age 25 in 1890. Two years later, for health reasons, young Thomas asked his aunt Mrs. Anne Renwick of Nelson to take over Dumgree from him and provide him with the position of sub-manager there, where he resided until his death in 1927 (he died in London). Dr. Thomas Renwick died 28 November 1879 (from The Cyclopedia of New Zealand, published Christchurch 1906, page 29 - Jenny Pierson's private collection).

Thomas Renwick married firstly Adeline Absolon (from Marlborough Online) in 1846.

In 1856 he came up with a scheme to establish a self sufficient community in the Wairau using the Delta Run. This became Renwick town. (From: Renwick: the story of a pioneer family / Elizabeth Airey)

Thomas Renwick married Anne Smith in 1872 (from New Zealand Marriages 1836-1956 version 2, published in CD form by New Zealand Society of Genealogists Inc. 2006 - Jenny Pierson's private collection).

Anne Renwick of Alton Street, Nelson, occupation Domestic Duties, owner of freehold sections 499, 503 and 505 voted in the 1893 elections (from New Zealand Electoral Roll 1893, published in CD form by New Zealand Society of Genealogists Inc. 2004 - Jenny Pierson's private collection).

Anne Renwick (Smith), widow of Nelson, died in Aberdeen, Scotland in 1937 (from NZSG Index version 4, published in CD form by New Zealand Society of Genealogists Inc. 2005 - Jenny Pierson's private collection).
